So you have drooping door handles. What is the problem and what do you do?

Some handles are sprung and some have no spring mechanism at all. These are unsprung and rely on a top quality lock or latch to carry them. Usually, the latter are high quality handles. If these are drooping then your latch is the thing that needs to be changed, either because it was never strong enough or has finally given up the ghost.

Lets assume you have sprung handles. If the handle spring goes then the latch or lock is left with the job of carrying the handles which is of course double the work it was designed for. Eventually this will expire too. The same applies if the latch has worn out and the handle springs need to do double the job!

The thing to be aware of is that if you are experiencing what you think is a broken handle spring it is definitely worth looking at the latch or lock mechanism too or you may find that soon after replacing your lever handles they go again.

We have just received some tech sales information from a manufacturer claiming that their handles are "ideal for coastal areas" which we simply did not believe. When we looked further they claim a 500 hours salt spray test. That'll be 20 days, then. Think about that. We guarantee absolutely NOTHING when fitted by the sea and won't buy anything that claims that it is ideal for it! Even grade 316 stainless hardware will have mild steel springs and circlips etc. We suggest that whatever you buy, you apply a huge cleaning and oiling regime and coat with a protective substance like beeswax but there is no doubt that it will eventually melt. Some finishes or materials are better than others but that is as far as it goes. Read More

Concealed door closers tend to be a bit innefficient and you have to take a lot out of the side of the door. We have also seen them pull out if not fitted perfectly. These overhead concealed door closers are all but invisible when the door is closed and the arm can be finished to any stainless, brass or ral colour to make it match in with your scheme when to door is open. Being cam action, they are also among the most efficient door closers on the market which means that the door can be very easy to open but return a good closing force. Ideal for DDA. We are often asked if stainless steel door hardware is fine for external situations. The answer is yes, as long as you keep it clean! By the sea or in any caustic environment expect everything to melt in minutes but if you keep it clean as per the manufacturer's instructions it will last longer. This grade 316 stainless steel letterplate has been outside our showroom, inland and in clean-ish air but under cover from direct rain for a year. We have not cleaned it and is showing signs of tarnishing already. Lower grades would be ruined. Imagine what it would look like if it was in direct rain or by the sea! Look after your stainless steel door furniture and it will look after you!

Cottage or barn door tee hinges in anything but black or galvanized steel? Unheard of? Not at Cheshire Hardware. We make the t hinges match the Thumb Latches and can produce them in any plated or waxed finish from Antique Brass to Satin Nickel, Distressed Nickel to IBMA Bronze. This one is Pearl Nickel. All Bronze, chrome and nickel finishes take px 5 weeks wait but are worth it.

One of the most regular questions in today's Q&A was "what is the best finish of brass for external use on door handles?"

The answer depends on more than just material properties. Briefly, you should consider the following:

Laquered brass door handles. This was originally brought in to preserve brass door handles on the shelf (so as not to sell people green door handles!) and the intention was always to remove it before fitting. These days people don't do this and consequently this allows some manufacturers to use brass of such poor quality under the laquer that there is no point. It is accepted that one should fit the laquered product. The range is huge but DO accept that once your rings or keys scratch the laquer the brass underneath will tarnish and you will need to strip the laquer to be able to do anything about it. Even then, if it is not top quality brass you may be better just buying new.

PVD or Stainless brass door handles. Specially treated to provide a very hard surface, this brass finish hardware can often carry a 25 year guaranteed finish. Sometimes a subtly different colour to normal brass but can still look good and is all but maintainance free. The problem is that these is a very limited range, so style wise you are on Hobson's choice.

Un-laquered brass door handles. Available in satin brass or polished brass. Provided you are prepared to get the Brasso out every now and then (polished brass) or give your handles a wipe down this is the best choice. The brass used is usually of top quality and exudes a warmth that no PVD or laquered brass can match. The range is very large and all the top manufacturers like Croft, Frank Allart, Brassart and Samuel Heath offer this finish. Because of the shelf life this range is not usually stocked and can take several weeks to make from scratch but at least you know you have door knobs straight off the polisher's knee! You can of course just let the door handles patinate naturally and see what you think. You can always restore them if you don't like the result with a bit of elbow grease!

If you live by the sea, a salty road or a chemical plant etc, expect anything to melt in five minutes (even stainless steel!) so take the above info and triple up your cleaning and polishing regime to allow it half a chance.
