There are two main types of door knob: Rim Door Knobs and Mortice Door Knobs. Your choice depends on the lock or latch they are to be used with. Rim locks sit on the face of the door and Mortice locks are cut into the edge of the door. Several door knobs are suitable for either function but many are not, so we have separated them for you.
